IPOA probes alleged police assault on woman in Narok

According to preliminary reports, the woman was assaulted in public by a police officer after a dispute over motorbike ownership with another party.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched a probe into an alleged incident in which a woman was physically assaulted by a police officer at Naroosura Police Station in Narok County.

This follows the circulation of images on social media showing injuries sustained by a woman, allegedly inflicted by a police officer.

According to preliminary reports, the woman was assaulted in public by a police officer after a dispute over motorbike ownership with another party.

The woman had visited the station to report a dispute over a motorcycle she jointly purchased with her husband. She claimed her husband had diverted the motorcycle’s proceeds to support another relationship, leaving her without income.

However, instead of receiving help, the woman alleges she was physically assaulted by a police officer using blunt objects.

Following the circulation of images depicting the woman's injuries on social media, IPOA reached out to her family on April 21.

IPOA Chairperson Issack Hassan confirmed that the authority is conducting an independent investigation into the matter.

“An independent investigation into the matter has been launched, and preliminary findings by our Rapid Response team indicate that the victim is receiving treatment at Narok Level 5 Hospital,” said IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan in a statement.

Issack assured the public that IPOA would conduct a thorough investigation and make appropriate recommendations if any officer is found to have violated the law.
